Line sort for deduping keyword lists

Keyword exports pile up. Related-term tools, Sheets columns, and old briefs leave you with the same phrase three times, mixed case, and blank rows. A line sort fixes that without opening a spreadsheet: one phrase per line, alphabetize, then keep unique lines. Toolsy’s sort lines tool does that in the browser. You paste, choose A→Z or Unique, and copy a list you can drop into a cluster map or a pre-publish check. This guide is for SEO and content lists, not for replacing research tools that still own volume and difficulty.
Why keyword lists get messy
You export related terms, paste a colleague’s column, then add manual ideas. Duplicates appear because the same intent shows up as “keyword research tool” and “keyword research tools,” or because two exports overlapped.
Case and spacing vary. One row starts with a capital; another has a trailing space from a CSV paste. Your eyes skip them until you alphabetize and see neighbors collide.
Empty lines sneak in from blank cells. They look harmless until you count rows and wonder why the CMS import is short.
What you can clean before you write
Strip the job to lines of text. If the export has volume columns, keep only the phrase column for this pass. Sort and dedupe first; rejoin metrics later if you still need them.
Decide whether near-duplicates count as one idea. Exact line unique mode drops identical strings. Close variants (“checker” vs “check”) still need a human pass after the machine pass.
Keep a raw backup. Sort and unique are cheap to redo; losing the unsorted export with notes is expensive.
Export shapes that sort well
One term per line works. Comma-separated rows on a single line do not. Split them first or you alphabetize giant strings nobody can scan.
Paths and tags also sort well. The same tool helps with URL slug candidates and tag inventories when you already treat them as line lists.
What not to expect from a sorter
Line sort does not score search volume. It does not cluster by intent. Pair the cleaned list with Related keywords for content clusters when you still need expansion and depth, then use the sorted unique set as your working inventory.
How to prepare the list you will paste
Copy from Sheets with one column selected. Paste into a plain text editor if the paste brings quotes or tabs; strip those so each line is one phrase.
Normalize obvious noise yourself: trailing spaces, leading bullets, numbering. The sorter compares whole lines; “1. robots.txt” and “robots.txt” stay different.
If the list is huge, work in chunks. Browser textareas handle typical SEO exports; million-row dumps belong in a script, not a web paste box.
Walkthrough in the line sort tool
- Open Sort lines.
- Paste one keyword or tag per line.
- Choose A→Z to alphabetize, or Z→A if you want the reverse order.
- Switch to Unique when you want each exact line only once (first occurrence kept).
- Use Reverse only when you need to flip the current line order without a locale sort.
- Copy the result and paste it into your brief, Notion table, or CMS field.
The compare uses a base locale setting with numeric awareness, so everyday name and tag lists behave sensibly across letter case. Empty lines stay in the output; delete them by hand if your import hates blanks.
Sort first, then unique
People often run Unique alone and keep a random first-seen order. For keyword reviews, sort A→Z first so duplicates sit next to each other, scan near-matches, then Unique to drop exact copies. That order makes the human pass faster.
Reverse versus Z to A
Z→A is a sorted descending list. Reverse flips whatever order is currently in the box. If you sorted A→Z and then Reverse, you get Z→A. If you Reverse an unsorted paste, you only flip the paste order. Pick the mode that matches the job.
How to check the cleaned list
Scan alphabetically for near-duplicates you still want to merge by hand. Decide which variant owns the URL.
Count lines before and after Unique. A small drop means light duplication; a large drop means you pasted overlapping exports and should trust the unique set more than the raw count.
Paste a sample into your publishing checklist. The SEO checklist before you publish hub is a good gate once the inventory is clean and you move to titles and snippets.
Related jobs after the list is clean
Expand a seed with Related keywords when the cleaned list is too thin for a cluster. Overview volume on keepers with your research plan tools, then assign pillar versus spoke.
Turn chosen titles into paths with Slugify. Clean phrases become clean URLs; see Slugify titles for clean URLs.
Keep the line sorter for the next export. Keyword work is cyclical: research, sort, write, refresh.
Limits, privacy, and when not to use this
Sorting runs in your browser. Toolsy does not upload the paste for this tool. Still treat client keyword strategies as confidential if your workplace requires it.
Unique mode is exact-string. It will not merge plural/singular or spelling variants. You still own that judgment.
Do not treat an alphabetized list as a content plan. It is inventory. Planning still needs intent splits and internal links, which the related-keywords guide covers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I sort lines alphabetically online for keywords?
Paste one keyword per line into Sort lines, choose A→Z, then copy the result. Use Unique afterward if the export had exact duplicates. Keep a backup of the unsorted list until you confirm the count looks right.
How do I remove duplicate keywords from a list?
Use Unique mode after you paste. The tool keeps the first occurrence of each exact line and drops later copies. Near-duplicates with different spelling still need a manual merge. Sort first so you can see neighbors before you Unique.
Is alphabetize list case-sensitive?
Toolsy uses a base locale compare, so letter case matters less for everyday tag and keyword lists. Exact Unique still treats differently spelled lines as different. Trailing spaces also keep two lines distinct.
Does the sorter keep empty lines?
Yes. Empty lines count as lines and stay through sort and unique. Delete blank rows before paste if your CMS import fails on empties. Leaving one blank as a section break is fine for human reading.
Can I alphabetize list items and reverse them?
Yes. A→Z and Z→A sort with locale rules. Reverse flips the current order without re-sorting. Use Z→A when you want a descending sorted list, not only a flipped paste.
Should I clean keywords before a content cluster?
Yes. A deduped inventory is easier to assign to pillar and spoke pages. Expand with related keywords for content clusters when you need more candidates, then sort again after the next export.
Where does this fit in an SEO publish checklist?
After research and before titles. Clean the phrase list, pick URLs, then run snippet and on-page checks from the SEO checklist before you publish. Sorting does not replace title length or SERP checks.
Is this line sort tool free?
Yes. There is no account requirement and no daily limit on the page. Work stays in the browser. Favorites and paid plans are separate from this free sorter.
Does sort lines upload my keyword list?
No. The paste stays on your device for this tool. That still does not replace company rules about where strategy docs may live. Use a private machine when the list is sensitive.
What if my list is a CSV with volume columns?
Extract the keyword column into one term per line before you paste. Sort and Unique the phrases, then VLOOKUP or join metrics back in Sheets if you still need volumes. Sorting multi-column CSV as raw text will scramble the rows.
For cluster mapping after the cleanup, continue with Related keywords for content clusters. For the pre-publish gate, use the SEO checklist before you publish.
Sort and dedupe lines
Paste one keyword per line, sort A to Z or drop duplicates, then copy the clean list. Runs in your browser.
