Bulk HEIC to JPG before you share a family album

Family album shares fail in boring ways. You dump a vacation folder of iPhone HEIC files into a chat, Drive link, or shared PC, and half the relatives see gray tiles. JPG still wins for mixed Windows phones and older laptops. Bulk HEIC to JPG means converting many files before you share, not renaming extensions. Toolsy’s HEIC to JPG handles one photo per upload with a free daily quota and a 10 MB cap; plan batches across days or use a local batch tool when the stack is huge. For Drive-specific habits, read HEIC photos in Google Drive: convert first. For the Windows codec story, read HEIC vs JPG on Windows.
Why family albums still trip on HEIC
iPhones often save HEIC to save space. Your phone shows every shot. Aunt Sue’s Windows laptop from 2018 does not. Group chats and school portals reject .heic even when your Mac preview looked fine.
Albums multiply the problem. One bad file in a 40-photo zip creates support texts for days. Converting the share set to JPG once is cheaper than explaining codecs at the reunion.
Google Photos and iCloud have their own download habits. This guide assumes you are packaging a folder for relatives who need files that open everywhere. Keep HEIC originals in an archive if you still want the camera masters.
Bulk convert versus one-off Drive fixes
U07 covers the Drive preview-versus-download trap for collaboration. This post covers volume: birthday parties, trips, memorial slideshows. Same converter, different planning.
G01 explains why Windows struggles with HEIC at all. Link relatives there when they insist the file is “corrupt.” Your job on album day is simpler: ship JPG.
Fake renames from .heic to .jpg without re-encoding still break decoders. Always convert.
What “bulk” means on a free web tool
Toolsy converts one HEIC or HEIF at a time. Free daily quota applies. Forty photos may take several days on free, or a Pro/local workflow if you need them tonight. Product honesty beats promising unlimited bulk in a browser tab.
When a local batch tool is smarter
Hundreds of RAW-adjacent HEIC dumps belong in Photos, ImageMagick, or a desktop batch converter on a machine you control. Use the web tool for the curated share set (the 30 keepers), not necessarily every burst frame from the camera roll.
How to prepare the album stack before you convert
Cull first. Delete blur and near-duplicates so you do not burn quota on rejects. Export or copy keepers to a to-share folder.
Watch file size. Toolsy accepts up to 10 MB per HEIC for this path; unusual exports may need a resize on-phone first. Keep originals elsewhere.
Decide privacy before you upload. Strip GPS after you have JPGs if the album should not leak home coordinates. See Remove EXIF GPS before sharing photos and Strip EXIF.
Naming for relatives
Use plain names: 2026-07-lake-03.jpg. Avoid IMG_4532.heic sitting next to IMG_4532.jpg without a note. Put JPGs in share and HEIC in originals so the wrong link is harder to send.
Drive and chat packaging
If the album lives in Drive, convert then upload JPGs and point people at that folder; details in HEIC in Google Drive. If you zip for email, zip the JPGs only. Mixed zips recreate the support thread.
Walkthrough: stack to shareable JPG set
- Collect keepers in one folder.
- For each file, open HEIC to JPG, upload, download the JPG.
- Track quota. Stop when the free daily limit hits; continue tomorrow or switch to a local batch tool.
- Spot-check a few JPGs on a Windows machine or phone that is not an iPhone.
- Strip EXIF if needed, then upload or zip the JPG set.
Processing is brief on the server. The upload is not kept after the response. That still means an upload; skip cloud conversion for sensitive ID photos mixed into the roll.
Quality checks before you hit send
Open random JPGs for orientation and faces. Confirm you did not upload a Live Photo companion by mistake. Confirm the zip opens on a second device.
If one HEIC fails, retry once; if it still fails, re-export from the phone or convert that frame on a Mac preview export.
Quota math in plain numbers
If free allows a small number of conversions per day, a 25-photo album may need multiple days. Say that out loud when someone asks for “the whole camera roll by tonight.” Either thin the set, pay for higher limits where offered, or run batch locally.

Slideshows, prints, and chat apps
Slideshow software at venues often expects JPG or PNG. Export the JPG set, then build the deck. Printing labs likewise reject HEIC at the counter more often than online order forms admit. Convert before you drive to the store.
Chat apps compress aggressively. Send a small preview set in chat and host the full JPG album on Drive or a shared folder so quality survives. Point relatives at the folder name that contains only JPG. If someone forwards a single HEIC from their camera roll into the thread, convert that stray file the same day so it does not reseed confusion.
Live Photos and bursts create extra files. Share still JPG frames unless the family explicitly wants motion. Motion packs are a separate distribution problem.
Limits, privacy, and when not to upload the album
Free daily quota and 10 MB caps are real constraints. Do not promise Toolsy as a drop-folder for 500 HEICs in one afternoon.
Memorial or legal photo sets may belong only on local disks under family agreement. Cloud converters with clear retention still leave an upload trail your relatives might not want for sensitive gatherings. Prefer local batch when in doubt.
Never email a fake-renamed HEIC. Never assume Preview on your Mac means Grandma’s PC is fine.
Frequently asked questions
How do I bulk convert HEIC to JPG?
Cull keepers, then convert each HEIC to JPG with a dedicated converter or a local batch app. On Toolsy, use HEIC to JPG one file at a time and respect the free daily quota. Package only the JPG outputs for the family share folder or zip.
Why cannot my relatives open the album?
Many iPhone shots are HEIC. Older Windows apps and some phones do not decode them. The files are not necessarily corrupt. Convert to JPG for a universal share set, and send the Windows HEIC explainer if someone wants the longer why.
Is HEIC to JPG free for many files?
Free tiers include a daily quota. Many files may need several days or another tool. Check the tool page for current limits. Plan the album timeline around quota instead of discovering it at midnight.
Does converting change how the photo looks?
The scene stays the same; JPG is a widely accepted format with normal compression tradeoffs. Spot-check faces and skies before you share. Keep HEIC masters if you still want the original camera file in cold storage.
Should I convert before uploading to Google Drive?
Yes when recipients need JPG. Drive may preview HEIC while downloads stay HEIC. Full Drive workflow: convert first for Drive. For family albums, prefer a JPG-only share folder to reduce wrong clicks.
What about HEIF files?
Treat HEIF like HEIC for this converter path. Upload and download JPG the same way. Keep originals labeled if your archive standard cares about the camera format name.
Can I just change the file extension?
No. Renaming .heic to .jpg without re-encoding leaves HEIC bytes behind a lying name. Recipients still fail. Always run a real conversion.
Should I strip GPS before a family share?
Strip when the album will live on the public web or in a wide chat and home coordinates should stay private. Convert to JPG first, then use Strip EXIF. Private intra-family folders are a judgment call; ask the people who own the homes in the shots.
What size limit applies on Toolsy?
HEIC to JPG accepts files up to 10 MB on the usual product path. Larger exports need a resize or a different tool. Most phone shots fit; edited dumps sometimes do not.
Does Toolsy keep my family photos?
For HEIC to JPG, the file is processed for the conversion response and not kept afterward. You still uploaded it. Use local batch conversion when cloud processing is unacceptable for the set.
Convert keepers with HEIC to JPG, then share the JPG folder. For Drive mechanics continue with HEIC in Google Drive; for Windows codecs see HEIC vs JPG on Windows. For a one-page habit before portals and chat apps, see Convert HEIC to JPG before uploading anywhere.
